A preliminary crash report is shedding light on the events surrounding a deadly Starke County plane crash.
James Evans III was killed 8 days ago, when his plane went down in a Knox cornfield. He suffered massive blunt-force trauma and internal injuries.
Evan was fourth in a party of five planes flying from Virgina to a fly-in in Wisconsin. The pilots had agreed to stop at the Starke County Airport to refuel, but that stop wasn't part of the original flight plan or log.
The first three pilots landed safely in Starke County. The fifth pilot says Evans plane tried to make an entry, but says Evans speech over the radio was "out of the ordinary" and he was fumbling for words.
According to our reporting partners at WKVI, the preliminary report says none of the pilots saw the crash happen.
A final report will be issued later.
