NEW CARLISLE, Ind. A three-year effort to build a Mandarin program at New Prairie Schools has paid off with the district's designation as a Confucius Classroom by the Chinese government's education arm.

The designation was awarded during a recent ceremony attended by officials from China and Indiana.

Jianyun Meng is the director of the Confucius Institute at Valparaiso University. He says New Prairie is only the third Confucius Classroom designated through his institute.

Meng says the district was recognized because of the number of students in its program and the number of years it offers the program to students.

Classes are offered from elementary school through high school.

The designation gives New Prairie more funding and resources to improve and expand the Mandarin program.
