The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office is closing an investigation into the deaths of Andrew and Michelle Zarobinski after determining they were the result of a murder-suicide.
On Tuesday, officers were dispatched to the Zabronski’s home in New Carlisle after their 14 year-old daughter called 911 saying her mother had been shot. Upon arrival, officers found the two dead from apparent gunshot wounds.
After autopsies were performed on both bodies, it was found that Michelle Zabronski died from two gunshot wounds to the head while Andrew Zabronski died from a single gunshot to the head.
The 14 year-old and her nine year-old sister were both witnesses to the crime. The nine year-old says that Andrew, the sisters’ step-father, came into the bedroom and ordered her out of the room. Both sisters say they heard arguing and then multiple gunshots.
The girls ran downstairs and were followed by their step-father. He spoke to the children briefly then went back upstairs and shot himself.
After conducting interviews, the County Metro Homicide Unit (CMHU) discovered that Andrew and Michelle had been separated for an extended period of time and were discussing a divorce.
It was after reviewing this and other evidence gathered from the CMHU investigation that the prosecutor’s office decided to close the case.
