New Buffalo clerk sentenced for embezzling

A former New Buffalo clerk was sentenced to five years of probation with the first 180 days in jail after being found guilty of embezzling more than $92,000 in city money on Monday.

Sandra White, 52, was found guilty of embezzlement by a Berrien County Trial Court in November of 2012. The maximum penalty for the charges is 15 years behind bars, but because White has no prior offenses, the judge said such an extensive sentencing was unwarranted.

According to the Herald Palladium, White denied stealing any money from the city during her terms as an office assistant, deputy clerk, and appointed clerk between 2003 and 2011.

The sentence also includes a restitution order of $110,858, in addition to court costs, that amount to a total fine of $113,407.
