A South Bend neighborhood got quite the Halloween scare when a tree came toppling down onto the busy sidewalk.
It happened at a home on East Pokagon Street in the city’s Harter Heights neighborhood, which is a popular destination for trick-or-treaters.
“I heard leaves apparently brushing the other leaves of the tree and the next thing we know, the tree was knocked down,” said Jane Barden, who lives next door.
Barden says it was damaged in an earlier storm, but the city only removed a portion of the tree.
Despite dozens of families being in the neighborhood for Halloween, no one was injured.
“I can't believe how lucky we were,” Barden said. “I guess it's something creepy to have happen on our Halloween.”
After neighbors got over the initial scare, the tree turned into quite the spectacle. Many people stopped to have their kids pose for photos. Some wearing super hero costumes pretended they knocked the tree down with superhuman strength.
“We’ve got the adventure over here,” Barden said. “It really was a Halloween miracle.”
