It will be a quick turnaround for Mark Neal after filling in for South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

The city controller since January 2012, Neal will act as South Bend’s mayor while Buttigieg serves six months of active duty with the Naval Reserves in Afghanistan.

Once that term is done in about a year, Neal plans on leaving government work altogether.

“I originally committed to pete that I'd work a couple years as a controller and then would look to make a smooth transition,” Neal said. “And obviously this has come up I'm happy to continue serving but I'll be happy also to go back to being a private citizen when I'm done.”

Neal is a former CFO for Press Gainey Associates.
