New furloughs that took effect Wednesday hit close to home in Michiana.
3900 people are employed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission but just 300 are continuing to work through the shutdown. Inspectors are still on the scene at all nuclear plants, including Palisades and Cook.
The Palisades plant has had its fair share of troubles, facing multiple shutdowns and repairs in the past. But if there are any issues or emergencies at the plant during the shutdown, NRC workers will be called back and taken off furlough status.
