At Corby’s bar in South Bend, some enthusiastic hair growers kicked off the sixth annual “Shave In” mustache bash on Saturday night.

Firefighters from all across Michiana will grow their mustaches over the course of February in hopes of winning one of five prizes, including “craziest” mustache.

Each firefighter paid $20 to enter the competition, all of the money collected will go to the Hoosier Burn Camp and the Firefighter Cancer Support Network.

On Saturday night one Mishawaka Fireman took the first leap and shaved his mustache for the first time in nearly three years.

“It's all about giving back to the community and some really deserving charities like the Hoosier Burn Camp for kids that gives a kid a chance or a burn victim to be a kid again and it's all about helping out and helping out the community and why not there is no excuse not to,” says Chad Steveken of Clay Fire Territory.

Last year over 100 people participated, raising nearly $7,000 to donate to charity. This year organizers hope to top that number.

The event ends on March 1st when all the money is tallied up and all the participants have their facial hair judged.
