UPDATE: Murder suspect arrested after standoff in Rockford

Rockford, Ill. 43-year old Anthony “Bones” Jefferson is apparently in no hurry to return to South Bend to answer to murder and other charges.

Jefferson was taken into custody last night at the home of his step-mother in Rockford, Illinois. Jefferson is accused of shooting two men at a home in the 600 block of Brookfield early Monday morning in South Bend. One of the victims died from his injuries.

During a court hearing in Illinois this morning, Jefferson refused to waive the extradition process, which could add another 60-days or to his return trip to South Bend.

Anthony Jefferson stands 6’8” tall and weighs 300 lbs.

It’s hard to imagine him going un-noticed regardless of the circumstances.

Last night in Rockford, Illinois, it was obvious just how serious the circumstances had become.

A man hunt had U.S. Marshalls and Winnebago County Police officers outside the home of Jefferson’s stepmom for a four and a half hour standoff.

“Just come on out and face whatever he has to face, just give yourself on up,” said Alice Jefferson. “Everybody know he's in the house, and I just don't want him to get hurt.”

Alice Jefferson said she hadn’t seen her step-son in years before he showed up on Wednesday.

The standoff ended when SWAT Team members entered the home and took an un-armed Anthony Jefferson into custody. Not a single shot was fired during the confrontation.

“Anytime there's no injury to the public, to the officers, to the suspect, you couldn't ask for anything more than that,” said Deputy Chief Dominic Iasparro with the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Police. “We believe that there was a dangerous criminal that was taken off the streets, tonight, the streets of Rockford.”

In addition to murder and attempted murder charges, Jefferson also faces robbery allegations in St. Joseph County, Indiana

He’s accused of taking money and cigarettes from a 711 in South Bend, and of taking money from a woman at a Mishawaka ATM.
