Municipalities in Michiana are getting ready for potential flooding issues caused by expected heavy rain. Because Elkhart has had serious problems with flooding in the past, the city has been preparing by having employees of the Streets Department fill sandbags during downtimes.
There are currently 2,000 sandbags that have been filled for residents who might need them.
Elkhart residents can pick up sand or sandbags at the Elkhart Streets Department at 2421 S. 17th Street in Elkhart.
There are no limits for the number of bags families can take.
Elkhart County residents can call the Emergency Management Department to find out where to pick up sandbags at 574.970.7996, and St. Joseph County residents can find out where to pick up sandbags by calling 574.235.9234.
