Munchie Mart request withdrawn before SB Common Council

For more than two hours people spoke out about what's become a very controversial convenience store in South Bend.

At the South Bend Common Council meeting about a dozen people stood up to voice their opinions about the Munchie Mart at Western and Kenmore.

In the end the owners of Munchie Mart withdrew the request to re-zone the property and a special exception request.

Council members let it be known that if it came to a vote, the ordinance would likely not pass. The convenience store planned to add nine parking spaces plus gas pumps.

Some neighbors spoke out claiming it was a magnet for drugs and violence.

“We have improved our community,” says neighbor Wendell Johnson. “You will see through our residents who participate and now stand up. We want something concrete and well put together.”

The council encouraged Munchie Mart to work with the neighborhood association and re-file its request this spring.
