Bucket list outing: Muffet golfs at Augusta

Muffet McGraw proved Monday she's just as good of a wife as she is a women's basketball coach.

Muffet gave her husband Matt one heck of a birthday present---a round of golf at Augusta National for the two of them.

The McGraws returned from Augusta Tuesday morning and were already browsing through the memories on their IPad inside the Muffet's office at Notre Dame's Joyce Center.

"it was just amazing," Muffet explained. "The tradition--it actually reminded me a lot of Notre Dame. Something about when you get inside a place, it's even better than it looks from the outside."

Notre Dame alum Condoleezza Rice is one of only two female members at Augusta and that only came last year. Prior to that, women were not allowed to members at Augusta.

But for Muffet, being invited to play at the famed Masters course wasn't a treat because of her gender but because of her love for the sport.

"I'm a golfer," Muffet says with a big smile. "We watched the Masters and that finish and every time we got to 'Amen Corner' and all the great spots on the course, it was really exciting. I had the locker room all to myself--right next to Condoleezza's locker so that was a thrill too."

Because of the poor weather in Michiana, this actually turned out to be the first round of golf for Muffet this year. She did well, sort of.

"I did shoot 90 but did have a couple holes left after I got to 90," Muffet explains. "And I debated then to just quit scoring and say, I shot 90."

She's won a national championship and led Notre Dame to the Final Four three straight years---but for Muffet, this is a memory for a lifetime too.

"this one is really special," the long-time Irish coach says. "This is a bucket list type of outing."

McGraw says there are about eight Notre Dame alums who are members of Augusta National. She has current ND Board of Trustees member Jimmy Dunne to thank for making that perfect birthday gift to her husband possible.
