LAPORTE COUNTY Officials are now releasing information on what might have caused a deadly explosion at a grain silo in LaPorte County.

LaPorte County Police Chief Deputy Jim Sosinski tells The Northwest Indiana Times that it was sparked by a malfunctioning motor.

He said two motors -- one in the silo's basement and one on a decking higher up -- were scorched. Investigators aren't sure if one or both sparked the grain dust explosion.

67-year-old James Swank was killed in the Monday blast at Union Mills.

A second fire ignited on Tuesday but heavy rain helped put the blaze out later that night.
