Police in Mishawaka took two people into custody Wednesday after discovering a mobile meth lab inside a car in the parking lot of Kroger.

At 12:05 p.m., officers arrived near the intersection of 12th St. and Merrifield Ave. and found the mobile lab in a maroon Chevy Camaro. Police said even they were surprised it happened in the middle of a busy shopping center.

“For some people and for us it’s still a shocking thing to have it right here in our own community, it’s a dangerous thing,” said Lt. Tim Williams of the Mishawaka Police Department.

According to Lt. Williams, one out of every six meth labs are caught because they catch fire or explode, which is why he says they pose such a danger to the community.

“Most of these people haven’t gone through the schooling to be called chemists,” says Lt. Williams, “so you have the amateurs mixing with no idea what they’re doing and what they’re going to get.”

No one was injured, but the area was taped off in case the lab exploded.
