Five days after flames tore through the former Dodge Manufacturing Plant in the Princess City, the Mayor of Mishawaka is extending his gratitude to the first responders who spent hours fighting the massive blaze.
The fire broke out Monday evening at the RMG Foundry Building in the 500 block of East Union Street, directly behind the Central Fire Station.
The combination of an old structure, high winds, and several fuel or propane-filled items inside, only made the firefight more difficult.
Mayor Dave Wood took to Facebook Saturday to commend their hard work and dedication.
He wrote, "Thanks to the firefighters of the Mishawaka Fire Department for answering the call to put out the biggest fire in Mishawaka since 1872. I am proud of you. You are outstanding!"
Mayor Wood also gave a shout-out to the other area departments who responded to the scene.
Investigators are still trying to determine what sparked the blaze.
