Mishawaka homeowner catches burglar in the act

Mishawaka, Ind. A Mishawaka homeowner turned the tables on a would-be burglar Friday morning. The man caught the burglar breaking into his home, beat the man and detained him until police arrived on the scene.

Police were dispatched at 10:40 a.m. to the home in the 2000 block of Lynn Street in Mishawaka.

"I felt like there was something not right and I noticed that the door was kicked in," said homeowner Dylan Thompson, who arrived at his home to find a strange car running in his driveway.

"So I started going through the house and he tried to run out the back door so I caught him there and beat him down," Thompson said.

The burglar had kicked in the front door and removed two bags worth of change from Thompson's bedroom.

"I held him down long enough to get my phone out and call the cops," he said.

Mishawaka Police arrived within minutes and took the burglar into custody. His injuries were treated at a local hospital before he was booked into the St. Joseph County Jail on a preliminary charge of burglary.

Thompson wasn't injured. Police were pleased with the outcome of the incident but said they do not advise trying to detain the burglar the way this homeowner did.

'The good part is the homeowner didn't get hurt it," said Lt. Tim Williams of the Mishawaka Police Dept. "It would have been a very tragic situation if the homeowner had been hurt or injured so we wouldn't advise always do something like this."

Lt Williams recommended staying outside if you witness a possible burglary in progress.

"Let us know what the plate number might be on the vehicle," Williams said. "That's something our dispatch can actually run so we can find out who that car might belong to prior to our arrival."

Police say the suspect was a South Bend man in his fifties. His name is being withheld until formal charges have been filed with the prosecutor's office.
