ELKHART A former Elkhart resident has died after a three-month battle with West Nile virus.

According to The Elkhart Truth, 49-year-old Elizabeth "Betsy" Housand had been living in Chicago and went to the emergency room in early October. She was eventually put into a medically induced coma and eventually moved to a long-term care unit in Mishawaka. She went into cardiac arrest over the weekend and died Wednesday at St. Joseph Regional Hospital.

Housand had lupus and had received two kidney transplants, which left her more susceptible to West Nile virus.

Housand was a 1982 graduate of Elkhart Memorial High School.

A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Granger.
