Michiana jail guard arrested for stealing inmate's money

A St. Joseph County jail guard is getting a taste of what life behind bars is like Friday after being arrested Thursday night.

The warden started investigating Trevor Reynolds on March 21, 2013 and the sheriff got involved on the 27th. So, it only took about a week for him to be behind bars.

A former inmate, who was in jail for alcohol related charges, claimed that his debit release card had not been returned to him and that eventually led to Reynolds.

“We had contacted the debit card company and we were able to determine where transactions had taken place since the individual had been released. One of those transactions was at an ATM machine. I was able to contact the bank security division and they were able to send me stills on the person that made that transaction,” says St. Joseph County Sheriff, Michael Grzegorek.

Some of those transactions were also made at a Meijer for gas.

The investigation is ongoing and is now in the hands of the prosecutor’s office who will be reviewing other materials for formal charges.

“I think the biggest deterrent is following them up and prosecuting people to the fullest extent of the law. Letting people know that you can’t commit crimes while working here and you can’t hide behind the badge and be a criminal,” Sheriff Grzegorek continues.

In the meantime, Reynolds will be housed in protective custody within the jail due to the fact that he used to be employed there.

Again, the investigation is ongoing so no formal charges have been made.

Reynolds was arrested on two counts of theft and one count of official misconduct. Both are class “D” felonies.
