Mentone man facing charges after allegedly trying to run from police

A Mentone man is facing charges after he allegedly tried to run away from officers while in handcuffs.

Police were called the Palestine Lake area on Saturday night to serve two active warrants for felony theft and felony failure to appear on 20-year-old Matthew Mahaska.

Officers found him walking along County Road 600 West near Blue Jay Drive, with several stolen items. After he was taken into custody, Mahaska took off, leading police on a short foot pursuit.

Mahaska is now facing additional charges of resisting and fleeing police, along with possession of paraphernalia.

Investigators say he may also be involved with a recent burglary in the Burket area, so more charges could be coming.

Mahaska is currently being held in the Kosciusko County Jail on $17,500 bond.
