SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Memorial Hospital is stepping up its security efforts by creating a hospital police department.

Memorial will be the second hospital in the state to do this.

On Thursday, eight men took the officer's oath in front of friends, family, and other members of local law enforcement.

Department Chief Dan Rutledge says having the new squad cuts down on response times when issues arise.

He says, "Now we have the power and authority to go straight to that location and facilitate whatever is needed rather than go to a door to wait for the local law enforcement and take them to where they need to go."

Memorial's men in blue now head to the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy where they will complete required training.
