Unconscious teen airlifted after crash

A young boy had to be flown from the scene of a serious crash Saturday afternoon.

ELKHART A young boy had to be flown from the scene of a serious crash Saturday afternoon.

It happened shortly before 1p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 33 and Sunnyside in Elkhart.

Darlene Eichelberger, 41, was driving a Mini Cooper southbound on Sunnyside. She ran a red light at the intersection with U.S. 33. The driver of a Chevy Avalanche, headed southwest on U.S. 33, wasn't able to stop and struck the passenger side of the Mini Cooper.

Mark Rich, 14, was sitting in the front seat, wearing a seatbelt. He was knocked unconscious by the crash and was flown to a Kalamazoo hospital for treatment.

Both drivers, and another 13-year-old boy were taken to Elkhart General Hospital for less serious injuries.
