NILES The Niles City Council has approved a measure to allow the Niles Riverfest to continue, but without any funding from the city.

The Niles Daily Star reports that Mayor Mike McCauslin had to cast a tie-breaking vote Monday night, in support of a motion not to provide a $2,500 contribution from the city.

The city attorney determined it is illegal for the city to donate taxpayer money to events not sponsored by the city.

Niles Riverfest takes place August 1st through the 4th at Riverfront Park.
