Despite earlier plans, Elkhart city employees will not be seeing any furloughs in 2013.
According to the Elkhart Truth, Mayor Dick Moore announced Monday that there are enough leftover funds from the 2012 budget to cover the cost of fully employing all cityworkers in the upcoming year.
Elkhart was ready to implement three-day furloughs for city police and firefighters, and five-day furloughs for the rest of the city’s workers as part of an effort to cut $1.9 million from the budget.
Union representatives from both the police and fire departments had threatened to file suit against Elkhart if the furloughs were implemented.
