Christmas came early this year to patients at Beacon Health System's Memorial Hospital of South Bend Tuesday morning.
For 10 consecutive years, members of the military service have collected toys that have been distributed to children and adolescents in a time of need.
Tuesday, United States Marines handed out toys from the Toys-for-Tots donation drive to patients in the pediatric care center.
Indiana Senator Joe Donnelly and members of the Marine Corps also visited with the families of the ill or recovering patients.
Some of these children may not be able to leave the hospital in time for Christmas to celebrate the holiday at home.
Despite the unfortunate news, active and retired Marines delivered gifts and supported them around this special time of year.
"And these Marines are here with us today,” said Donnelly. “You see them in the room with this little child and you see a tear in their eye. And you think to yourself they have seen some of the toughest fighting the world has ever seen and here they are with a tear in their eye."
Donnelly along with Marines and volunteers would like to continue the tradition in years to come.
