It was a tough day in court for the family of a bicyclist who was hit by a car and killed in Elkhart County this summer.
The driver who hit him fled the scene, but was later arrested after an anonymous tip led officers to him.
The judge accepted a plea agreement from the attorneys of Kevin Meyer, 19. He was sentenced to three years of home detention and will have his license suspended for two years.
It's a sentence that the friends and family of Raymundo Sabag feel does not do justice to the 60-year-old father who will never see his home again.
“I'm afraid that teenagers will think it's OK to kill somebody and leave them laying on the street and only do home detention and get your driver's license suspended for two years,” said Orlando Maldonado, a family member of Sabag.
Meyer's family declined to comment on the case.
Before the sentence was read Meyer apologized to Sabag’s family. He said panic caused him to leave the scene.
