Man sentenced for attempt at escaping jail

St. Joseph County, Ind. A man who commandeered a bread delivery truck to smash through a jail's security gate has learned his punishment.

Franklin Rice, 27, was sentenced Thursday to six years in prison on an escape charge.

He was behind bars in the St. Joseph County Jail awaiting sentencing on multiple counts of burglary, when he escaped back in April.

Rice told the judge he panicked at the prospect of a long sentence on those charges.

Prosecutors say he took off in a bread truck, whose driver had left the keys in the ignition, and then crashed through a gate.

At the time, rice was helping the driver unload, as part of the inmate worker program. Police arrested him at a home in Bremen later that day.

Rice's lawyer unsuccessfully argued for a shorter sentence, saying his escape wasn't violent.
