Indiana DNR officials are investigating a drowning on Lake Maxinkuckee in Culver.

Culver EMS and police responded to a water emergency call around 7 p.m. Sunday. There they recovered Valentin Sirghi, 22, from the chilly lake waters - near the public beach.

A friend, who was swimming with Sirghi at the time, told rescuers the two were wading near the buoy line offshore. While the friend was returning to land, he was alerted to Sirghi going under.

Officers arrived on scene and recovered Sirghi's body at approximately 8:00 p.m. Paramedics then loaded the man onto a stretcher and into an ambulance destined for the hospital.

Sirghi was pronounced dead at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Plymouth at approximately 8:30 p.m. He was a 2009 graduate of Knox High School.

The official cause of death will not be known until an autopsy report is completed. However, it has been confirmed that weather was not a factor in the drowning. The depth of the water in which Sirghi drowned is not known, and it is unclear whether he knew how to swim.
