It happened around 11:00 a.m. in the 3000 block of Baugher Dr. in Tippecanoe, just off State Road 331.
The man was inside when the fire broke out, and according to the fire chief, refusing to come out so he could retrieve a family pet.
Firefighters from four area departments were on the scene for hours trying to put out the blaze, which also ignited ammunition inside the home.
The man was flown to a Fort Wayne burn center and is currently in critical condition.
