Man hospitalized after early morning gunfire

A man is in critical condition after early morning gunfire and an apparent "hit and run" on South Bend's West side.

Police were dispatched around 3:50 a.m. to the Citgo gas station on the corner of Bertrand and Olive streets for shots fired.

When police arrived, most people had dispersed, but officers were directed to care for a man who was apparently struck by a vehicle.

No one was injured by gunshots, but a 47-year-old man was left with a severe head injury after a white vehicle fled the scene. Police are not certain whether that vehicle was connected to the shooting or fleeing gun fire.

Witnesses tell police a large group of people had been gathered in the lit gas station parking lot through the early morning. When shots were fired, multiple people hit the ground in an attempt to avoid gun shots and some fled.

At this time, police consider the incident a "hit and run," and are searching for the vehicle.
