Man formally charged for two rapes that happened in the 1980's

St. Joseph County, Ind. A man, already serving a life sentence for raping a Niles woman, was formally charged Thursday in two decades-old rape cases out of St. Joseph County.

49-year-old Raymond Ebel was arraigned on two counts of rape, two counts of burglary and one count of criminal deviant conduct.

The alleged rapes happened in 1987 and 1988. At the time, DNA taken at the scene and hospital could not be identified. But last year, Indiana State Police contacted South Bend Police saying they found a match in their database.

DNA and fingerprint tests confirmed Ebel was their man, and the Prosecutor's Office filed charges against him back in May.

Ebel's initial hearings are set for October 10 and 28.
