Shyheem Jones, 18, was apprehended at approximately 7:00 a.m. Monday morning by a U.S. Marshal Task Force in Indianapolis.
He was charged on March 19, 2014 with murder in the shooting death of Cornell Taylor, which occurred on the 1800 block of N. Fremont Street.
Jones is currently in custody in Marion County, and authorities anticipate he will be transported to St. Joseph County soon.
Since the charge is murder, no bond was set.
On March 18, local police responded to a shooting around 7 p.m. after ShotSpotter detected gunfire in the 1800 block of Fremont Street. That's near the LaSalle Landing apartments.
Cornell Taylor, 19, was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he later died.
A second victim, a 20-year-old man, was treated and released.
Metro Homicide says the shooting apparently stemmed from an altercation that took place at a large gathering. Some witnesses were being uncooperative Tuesday night and had to be forcibly removed from the scene.
After exchanging heated words with officers, one young woman was handcuffed and taken away in a squad car for questioning. Police say she was later released.
"Emotions were running high, of course, and some people had to be physically removed by the officers up there so not to further contaminate the crime scene," said Lt. Dave Wells, assistant commander of the Metro Homicide Unit. "So that's one of our main priorities. We don't want people kicking shell casings or walking away with evidence."
"Getting tired of these shootings and nobody calling down here and helping us," Wells said. "We can't do this alone. We need people to come forward and help us, give us a name, call us at homicide, call CrimeStoppers, lead us in a direction where we can make an arrest and solve this."
