ELKHART, Ind. - A man is behind bars following a fatal hit and run accident over the weekend.

Kent Phouangmalay, 21, was arrested after reportedly hitting a man on Main St. in Elkhart near Concord Mall.

Police say he hit the man in the 3700 block of South Main.

According to our reporting partners at The Elkhart Truth, Frank Nelson, 73, of Elkhart, had just parked his car and was walking across Main St. when he was hit.

Two off-duty officers saw it happen, and followed the driver after he fled.

He eventually stopped in the JC Penney parking lot and was taken into custody.

Phouangmalay is facing charges of operating a vehicle causing serious bodily injury when intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident.

He is being held in the Elkhart County Jail without bond.
