Man arrested after domestic dispute escalates to apparent arson

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- South Bend Police arrested a 24-year-old man after a domestic dispute ended in a possible arson Wednesday night.

They were called to Countryside Village mobile home park in the 1000 block of S. Mayflower Road around 6:30 p.m. for a fight between a husband and wife.

Shortly after an officer arrived on the scene, the husband barricaded himself inside the couple's trailer while his wife was outside.

Eventually, loud pops were heard and smoke was seen coming from the trailer.

"He was putting bullets in our microwave and everything," said Jessica O'Banion, the man's wife. "I don't know how the fire started or what even happened to make him want to start it. But, he started a fire in my trailer."

Firefighters were able to knock the small blaze out quickly. But, the trailer sustained significant damage.

"I don't have anything," O'Banion said. "I don't have any type of help, at all. I have loving neighbors, a loving community."

Her husband was arrested at the scene for apparent arson.

Firefighters are still investigating the cause of the blaze.

No one was seriously injured.
