The shopping scene on Elkhart’s north side is expected to pick-up.
On Tuesday Thompson Thrift, a Terre Haute-based developer, announced plans to build a $15 million strip mall on a vacant lot at the corner of County Road 6 and Cassopolis Street.
Although client and government negotiations are still underway, T.J. Maxx, PetSmart and Shoe Carnival have already expressed interest.
If approved, the project would net $250,000 in property taxes, create 250 new jobs and spur further development near the Indiana Toll Road.
“We believe retail is a herd mentality, when you create one opportunity you create synergy, excitement at an intersection,” said Ashley Boyd the VP of Thompson Thrift Development. “You add credit to a sight that is only going to help fuel additional retail in and around that area."
The Elkhart Redevelopment Commission will vote on the proposal next month. Should it give the green light, construction will begin by May 2013 with completion in March 2014.
