MOR/ryde zoning request approved by default after commissioners tie in vote

After three hours of debate and three hundred emails the Elkhart County Commissioners made a decision about a controversial zoning change.

The company, MOR-ryde International, requested to re-zone 12 acres of property for manufacturing use. The manufacturer of commercial and recreational vehicles would build east of their current location in Osolo Township, south of C.R. 6, and west of C.R.15.

Neighbors from the surrounding subdivisions and teachers from Eastwood Elementary were lined up to speak out against MOR-ryde's expansion.

After meeting with area residents for six months MOR-ryde offered a compromise.

They are willing to put in a berm to reduce the noise and will not be putting in a drive on C.R.15, keeping traffic away from homes and the school.

In the end there was a tie vote, with only two commissioners voting since one abstained with a conflict of interest. Legally that means the decision falls back on the Elkhart County Plan Commission's recommendation, which was favorable.

“I like this company a lot folks,” explained Elkhart County Commissioner Mike Yoder, who voted yes. “I like what they do. I like what I saw at this particular site and I'm in agreement that this particular company could be integrated fairly well with the neighborhood.”

It will take 90 days legally for the rezoning request to take effect. In the meantime the neighbors say they will continue to fight this.
