Lyons Industries expanding, adding more jobs

Dowagiac, Mich. Lyons Industries in Dowagiac will hire more workers as part of a $2 million expansion project.

The company is adding an additional 32,000 square feet to its current facility on M-62. The extra space will be used to house several semi loading bays and a warehouse, allowing Lyons Industries to ship its products more quickly.

It's an addition the company president says they desperately need because of increasing demand for their products. Over the past year alone, they've increased sales by 75 percent.

"We're at the point now where we're introducing a new product about every three weeks," said Lyons Industries President Lance Lyons. "And, really it's that new product that's driving the business."

The company manufactures shower, bath and sink components that are sold to major retailers like Menards. Lowe's recently joined their customer base, which has contributed to the dramatic spike in sales.

The growth is remarkable, especially considering the company's humble beginnings.

Lyons industries started manufacturing plumbing vents in 1966. The small operation was run by Lance's grandfather in the basement of his home.

"My grandmother and my uncle Larry, who was in high school at the time, assembled the vent in the basement," Lance said. "And, the business grew out of the basement."

Lance's father and current mayor of Dowagiac, Don Lyons, took the operation over and moved it into a storefront downtown. He adopted an idea early on that's helped the company remain successful.

"I have had a philosophy from the very beginning that we were going to reinvent the business every three years," Don said. "I want to be able to stand at any point in time and look backwards and see a business today that is about 80 percent different than it was three years ago."

Lyons Industries now offers more than 1,000 different combinations of products, making them a leader in the industry.

In order to help keep up with the changes, they'll need more hands.

"We've started a very aggressive hiring practice," Lance said. "We had about 45 to 50 positions to fill. We've filled about half of those."

The rest of the jobs will be filled in early 2014, right before the busy spring season starts back up. Most of the openings are in manufacturing roles, but there are jobs available in some other areas.
