Recycling program teams up students and firefighters

South Bend, Ind. On Wednesday we caught up with one South Bend student who's already taking his final exam.

Demarrio Henderson went through several obstacle courses at the South Bend Fire Department as part of his graduation from the “Recyclers - Earn a Bike" program.

Kids team up with neighborhood firefighters to repair a bicycle and learn about safety.

It teaches children important skills, and promotes healthy exercise and recycling.

Plus, once he completed the course Demarrio was rewarded with the bike he repaired, along with a helmet and lock.

“By me being a single parent, I used to be the one to fix the bike tires,” said Demarrio’s mom Debra Walker. “Now today, he has learned the skills so that he can do it himself.”

I am more comfortable now that he knows the safety rules
The program is free to kids in the community.

If you'd like to enroll your child or donate a bike, just contact the St. Joseph County Health Department.
