Both local students in the Scripps National Spelling Bee did not make it to the semifinal round.
Cameron Haynes, 13, is a seventh grader from Stevensville in Berrien County. Hudson Wellin, 14, is an eighth grader from Community Baptist Christian School in South Bend. Both made it to the third round in the competition.
The youngest competitor is an 8-year-old from South Carolina, and nearly half of the 281 competitors speak more than one language.
The preliminary round is Wednesday, followed by semi-finals and finals Thursday.
