Local ice rinks open up for winter, despite warm weather

November and December have seen some of the warmest temps to date, and after a week of warm weather delays ice skaters can finally take to the rink.

On Saturday, Mishawaka’s Merrifield Ice Rink opens for its annual Winterfest. To mark the grand opening of the rink’s winter season, guests can enjoy free admission, skating rentals, hot dogs and hot chocolate from 5 to 8 p.m.

Howard Park Ice Rink in South Bend is also back in business after workers shut it down due to the area’s persistent rain and warm temperatures. Workers at the 54-year-old skating rink have been fighting Mother Nature all week, and finally won out when they opened back up Friday at 3p.m.

Ice skaters in Elkhart will have to stay off the ice or go elsewhere until Thursday Dec. 13th, when the NIBCO Water and Ice Park reopens.
