Local fire department shows off new Cobra EXM Monitor

A local fire department continues to use the latest technology to help keep you safe.

About two months ago, Elkhart Brass, a company known for making firefighting equipment let Clay Fire Territory test its newest remote controlled device known as the Cobra EXM Monitor.

It's a piece of equipment that sits on top of the fire truck and shoots water out of it.

Many of us have seen firefighters connecting all of the hoses, carrying them to the fire and then individually spraying the fire with them.

Well, when you have a crew of only three, the cobra takes care of all that.
It may be small but it sure is mighty. All it needs is two firefighters to make it work. An engineer to set up the pump and another one to use the remote control.

“If we have a fire in our district, we are arriving on the scene we are a single engine company we don't have any other engine companies. They are usually about two, three maybe four minutes out. So, with three personnel getting off of a fire truck at a fire, my engineer can go ahead and set the pump and I can get a stream going right away if it’s a fire that’s fully involved right now and we can go ahead and knock it out,” says Clay Fire Territory Captain, Lucas Gluchowski.

Gluchowski says the Cobra is able to move in ways other monitors can't.

He says it's more accurate, and with the remote control he is able to get to the fire, walk around surveying the entire scene while shooting water exactly where it needs to go.

“This monitor gives us anywhere from five to 10 times the amount of water that we are getting out from a regular hose line,” Gluchowski continues.

A regular hose shoots about 250 gallons of water per minute. The Cobra shoots more than 2,000 gallons of water per minute.

So, while the Cobra is really beneficial for stations like Clay Fire Territory, it ultimately benefits you as a resident, homeowner or businesses owner because with the Cobra, they are able to provide you with the help you need as soon as they get to the scene.
