Local debutantes volunteer at Food Bank of Northern Indiana

The Food Bank of Northern Indiana received some extra help from a group of local debutantes.

Nearly 30 high school girls from the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority chapter volunteered to come in on their day off to off their services.

The girls helped stuff bags for autistic children and sorted and stacked food items on pantry shelves as part of the learning activities and service projects they participate in leading up to their spring cotillion.

The idea behind such service days is to teach the girls skills that will help them as they grow into adulthood.

“It teaches responsibility and community responsibility. Part of just being a good citizen is giving back to your community and I think they can see the need. The need there and that there are things they can do,” said Wilma Gary, a pre-debutante ball committee member

The scholarship cotillion takes place every other year.
