Local BMX star, Brett Banasiewicz is making his South Bend debut this weekend after spending the past few months recovering from a serious bike accident.

Banasiewicz suffered a traumatic brain injury last August and has since been undergoing intense rehabilitation and therapy. On most days, his therapy session can occupy the majority of his time.
His family members say he has been making every possible effort to get back on a bike.

The 2012 Toyota Athlete of the Year’s injury left its mark in the BMX community. Now, several major competitions, including the Dew Tour and the X-Games require athletes to wear certified helmets.

Banasiewicz’s own skate park, The Kitchen, will hold its second annual Pro-Am contest this weekend. Brett will return to the South Bend park to host the event.
