A domestic dispute led to a standoff Saturday night in St. Joseph County.

A woman called 911 just before 10 p.m. asking for help from police. The woman proceeded to hang up the call.

St. Joseph County Police arrived on the scene just north of the Cleveland and Grape Road intersection. They discovered a man had barricaded himself inside a house. A woman and three kids managed to make it out of the house safely.

The man remained inside the house and threatened to take his own life, according to Sheriff Mike Grzegorek. He told police he turned on the gas and propane tanks in an effort to harm himself.

Grape and Cleveland were blocked off for about two hours as police investigated the situation.

Police evacuated the area as a precaution and called in the SWAT team.

Negotiators talked to the man for 50 minutes and eventually convinced him to come out of the house.

There we indications that the suspect was taking medicine and had been drinking, according to Grzegorek.

The man was taken to the hospital.
