The man elected to keep tabs on the town of LaGrange is now accused of stealing from it.
Sheriff’s deputies arrested LaGrange Town Clerk, Michael Rowlison, yesterday afternoon on two felony counts of theft, and one felony count of official misconduct.
Police say Rowlison allegedly used the town credit card to purchase dozens of items for personal use. Much of the stolen goods have been recovered from his house of Poplar Street, just a few blocks from the LaGrange town hall.
According to Det. Don Faust, LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department, "somebody working in the town government saw something. Rather than just blowing it off or just pushing it aside, started to watch and monitor their particular area closer and that led to other members of the town board looking into it."
During police questioning, Rowlison said he had been making personal purchases for about five years. The town is now preparing to call in a state auditor to review its books.
