Kindergartners pay tribute to troops

Tomorrow marks the 237th birthday of the United States Marine Corps, and to celebrate the occasion a group of elementary students in Elkhart participated in a special tribute.

At Mary Daly Elementary School, three kindergarten classes decorated a banner to present to the Marine Corps League as a thank you for their dedication in service. The kindergartners used paint to cover the banner with their handprints.

Wes Liggett, a teacher at Mary Daly Elementary as well as a Marine combat veteran, organized today's event. Liggett was honorably discharged in 2005 after four years of service that included multiple tours in Iraq.

He says, “In our school community, we always stress service to others. Not just military service - service of any kind. And we really think that helping each other and getting along and the teamwork, there are some important things that we can learn from the Marine Corps.”

The lesson Liggett wanted to teach today was not just about supporting military service, but any service to others no matter how big or small.
