Kelly excited to land 4-star quarterback DeShone Kizer

Irish coach Brian Kelly has Everett Golson returning from an academic suspension and is emphatic that Malik Zaire will get a legit chance to win the starting quarterback job, and then right behind them will be a new freshman sensation arriving in the fall.

4-star quarterback recruit DeShone Kizer of Toledo Central Catholic in Ohio signed his National Letter of Intent to join Notre Dame on Wednesday.

Kelly is very high on Kizer's abilities.

"There are so many things to love about DeShone," Kelly said Wednesday. "He's 6'5", I love that. He's 212 pounds, I love that. You have a tall athletic quarterback that has good size and can do the multiple dimensional things that we love. Now we have three quarterbacks that all do the same things."

For Kelly, that's a huge advantage because the Irish won't have to alter the system to accomodate different style quarterbacks.

Kizer sported a Notre Dame hat and green and white bow-tie at his signing ceremony on Wednesday.

"Notre Dame is a truly special place," said Kizer, who took his official visit last weekend. "It was an experience I'll never forget and I know that's how its going to be for the next four years."

Kizer also says he's excited to work with new Irish quarterback coach Matt Lafleur.

"I believe we're going to be a very special program over the next four years and I'm expecting to bring home a couple of trophies," Kizer added.

Kelly says Kizer also has that 'it' factor.

"This kid loves to have the ball in his hands when the game is on the line," Kelly explained.

Kizer is finishing up his senior year at Toledo Central Catholic. He'll arrive on campus in June.
