A man arrested for beating several puppies to death learned his punishment Tuesday.
Joseph Perry, 38, pleaded guilty to two counts of neglect of an animal.
The remains of three puppies were found behind Perry's home on Ironwood Road in South Bend in August of last year.
Perry was nowhere to be found at the time the animals were discovered, but he turned himself in after police issued a warrant for his arrest.
Perry was charged with several counts of mutilating an animal and would have gone to trial last month, but he reached a plea deal in the case.
In court on Tuesday, Perry was sentenced to a 24-month suspended sentence, with 24 months on probation.
He's also required to spend one day a week for 100 weeks working in an animal shelter.
