One week from now, the Notre Dame football team finally opens the 2013 season.
"We're excited to get the season going," says captain and offensive tackle Zack Martin. "The motivation is getting it going. We've been waiting how many months. I think guys are just excited. We've had a great camp and I know the guys are looking forward to it."
After an extremely long off-season following a brutal loss to Alabama in the BCS National Championship game, the Irish are ready to end camp and battle Temple August 31st at Notre Dame Stadium.
"We're mentally at that point where we want to go play somebody else," Irish coach Brian Kelly explains.
"I definitely want to play a real game," cornerback and captain Bennett Jackson says. "I know everyone is eager to play somebody else. We've been scrimmaging throughout the summer. It's just good to finally see your opponent and get after it on the field."
"Oh I'm ready," linebacker Danny Fox says as he looks out to see the field at Notre Dame Stadium. "Seeing this makes my skin boil. I'm kind of excited to hit someone else besides our team. It's kind of boring when you play the same people every day and smash the same heads. I'm ready to go."
Of course, there's always a contrarian.
"It's still a week away," safety Matthias Farley explains. "My mindset, the team's mindset is focusing one day at a time. A week from Saturday we are going to play Temple regardless. Being all antsy and giddy about it or whatever is not going to be beneficial. The game is going to be here--so just focusing on Monday's practice, Tuesday's practice is the best way to go about it."
Notre Dame and Temple will kickoff at 3:30 next Saturday at Notre Dame Stadium on WNDU. Join Jeff Jeffers, Angelo Di Carlo, Chuck Freeby and Gabby Gonzalez for Countdown to Kickoff at 2pm next Saturday on Channel 16.
