Indiana House passes bill to help schools hire police officers, improve security

A stripped-down proposal that would start a state grant program to help school districts hire police officers and buy safety equipment has been approved by the Indiana House.

Representatives voted 86 to 6 in favor of the bill after provisions that would have required all public schools to have gun-carrying employees during school hours were pulled last week.

The proposal was shelved after questions were raised about training standards and the safety of having non-police officers carrying guns in schools.
