Making gingerbread houses is a holiday tradition the whole family can enjoy, and it's just as much fun as it is delicious!
Blue Chip Casino Sous Chef Charlene Hall says the key it to give it time. Bake the frame and put it together with royal icing; then let it sit overnight to harden.
“Royal icing is the cement of the baking world,” Hall says. “It’s key, otherwise your house is going to fall apart while you try to make it.”
She decorates with candy, or cereal for rooftop shingles. Royal icing makes for great snow as well. For trees, use a waffle ice cream cone and dab green dots around the outside.
An easy tip for children is to build around a milk carton for stability, or to use a gingerbread kit.
Several small houses and a life-size gingerbread home are on display at the Blue Chip Casino. The life-size house measures about 64 square feet in size.
